Whats the difference between a Router and a Switch?

You walk into a retail store with all networking stuff clumped together and no employee knows anything. I'm somewhat computer literate, but by no means a genius so please don't through complicated terms at me. Haha. I know I need a router but, it's more of a curiosity question.Thanks for all that respond.
