Pontiac grand prix cut off issue?

Well guys my girlfriend has a 2004 ponitac grand prix, when i drive the car i have no problems, when she drive the car, she told me it cuts off sometimes when first starts is up. Well today her check engine light came on, so i asked her when was the last time she had a oil change and she told me it was like 6 months ago. So neverless the engine has no or vey little oil in , could this be the reason why it cuts off when she starts the car up? I know on some cars, the car will cut off if the computer reads their is no oil in the engine.
