Crunching sounds in ribs with sharp painful inhalation?

I think these are two different things. The pain you felt as a kid was probably pericordial catch syndrome, a benign condition without a known cause that results in brief, stabbing pain in the ribs that can be released by deep inhalation. What you have right now sounds like pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the membrane around the lungs. Pleurisy can result in a crunching noise while moving because the membrane rubs against the chest wall instead of gliding smoothly. You need to go to a doctor and get this checked out and treated.
